Beauty Tips 101: Brushes vs Sponges

"Most Makeup Artists will tell you that brushes are the most important tool for applying makeup. I absolutely agree! I can pretty much use any brand of makeup and achieve the look I'm hoping for as long as I use good quality brushes. I like to think of myself as a painter. I wouldn't paint a picture with sponges or my finger. Now there are times when both can come in handy like blending or cleaning up a mistake. Brushes also save you money by wasting less product.

A clean brush is a happy brush! Brush cleanser is good for quick cleans between personal use or clients during an event, but I give my brushes a brush bath after I'm done using them for the day.

*Pro Tip* Use baby shampoo in warm (not hot) water. Swish the brush around and rinse. Make sure you form your brushes and lay them flat on a towel over night. The shampoo will disinfect and condition the bristles. After using them on my clients I add a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the brush bath, especially for the lip brushes.

*Pro Tip* Make sure you don't set your brushes upside down in a container wet. This could cause the glue in the brush handle to separate and your handle will fall off.

Practice makes perfect! If your brushes seem uncomfortable to use, keep trying. Practice holding them at the end of the handle. Not only will this give you more stability but it will help you achieve a clean, blended look."
