Tasha: When did you decide to take your talents in the path of a career?
CW: "I began vocal and guitar lessons at age nine. My father was a major league pitcher and still works in the majors today. I learned from my dad that you can have a career doing what you love if you are willing to put in the time and effort. By age 15, I was playing public shows and I was touring at age 20. After five years of touring I realized I wanted to go into weddings and private events, and it’s one of the best decision I ever made."
Tasha: Where did you meet your band mates?
CW: "I auditioned people from all over the country; New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Tampa. After a couple years, I finally put together my ‘dream team’ of musicians that can literally play any style of music and do it well. I have had all the same members for years now and I am humbled to have them in None Other."
Tasha: How do you set yourself apart from other bands?
CW: "None Other is a ‘real band’. The members you see on our website will be performing live. Many bands don’t have a real team. Imagine your favorite sports team switching 25-80% of the team every few games. That team wouldn’t be in any playoffs. We are also not a ‘karaoke’ band, as is sadly common with many wedding bands that play to a laptop. The videos on our website are 100% live and the band you see and hear will look and sound like that at your event. Finally, we are hyper-vigilant in our desire to surpass the expectations of our clients and planners. We always strive to be better than the previous event."
Tasha: What are five things you couldn't do your job without?
CW: "1. The same members. We have rehearsed and performed so much with the exact same band members that we could never put on the level of performance we do with ‘pick up’ or ‘back up’ musicians.
2. Our equipment. I have invested over $100,000 to provide a national quality show for guests. From sound to lighting to LED risers and transportation. I could have invested far less money in the band, but we would not be able to sound and perform the way we do today.
3. Experience. A band is more than the music. It memorizing songs so the band engages the audience instead of reading off iPads or music books. It’s knowing when and how to make announcements, follow timelines, working with planners and vendors, and selecting just the right songs that helps pack the dance floor at every moment. No matter how talented a band is, the fact that None Other has performed over 500 weddings and events is a giant asset.
4. A great attitude. Most problems can be solved quickly with a positive attitude. Years ago, I had a couple musicians that complained constantly. They were quickly replaced. A group of smiling people ready to give their best is something I need to make every event the best it can be.
5. Servants. It sounds funny but it’s true. First and foremost, the band and myself strive to be servants for clients and staff. If my band walks onto a property ready to help anyone, even a staff member needing help with a table, it makes the entire event better. Great events come from people ready and willing to work together. If everyone comes with the attitude to serve others, the event will usually be much more fun and successful."
Tasha: What is your favorite song to cover?
CW: "Michael Jackson ‘P.Y.T.’ I spent four months studying MJ’s voice and figuring out how he acheived that iconic sound. Seeing the crowd sing and dance along to that song is always awesome."
Tasha: What is the most memorable event you have performed at?
CW: "We played to 10,000 people for New Years Eve at Busch Gardens a couple years ago. Seeing glow sticks waving in the air a few hundred yards back was pretty cool."
CW: "Journey “Don’t Stop Believing”. I read that it is the #1 downloaded song of all time. It’s one of the few songs in the world that starts slow and romantic and then rocks out, plus everyone knows the words so the crowd joins in every time."
